Reported findings and coverage.
The finding
Virtual-school flags identify remote or primarily online public schools.
How to read it
Use flags with enrollment, district, and state context. A virtual flag describes delivery model, not program quality.
Source and vintage
NCES CCD SY 2023-24 with CRDC 2021-22 fallback where needed. K12 Atlas release v2026.07.
Use and limits
This page does not infer why enrollment changed and does not label schools.
CSV is a public summary slice, not the full paid sheet.
Virtual and charter are separate classifications
A school may be virtual without being a charter, or a charter without being virtual. The 465 virtual charter records are the intersection of those flags; the 2,598 virtual records describe a broader group. These counts describe release v2026.07, not a current enrollment register.
A snapshot does not establish growth. Measure change with comparable observations for the same school universe across years, checking openings, closures, and classification changes. This release uses CCD SY 2023–24 with CRDC SY 2021–22 fallback where needed.
